MOMENTUM – UP TO ~50% EXTENSION IN OIL-DRAIN INTERVALS

Marine logistics company extended oil-drain intervals up to ~50% by switching to Shell Rimula R4 X.

Company:   PT Momentum Indonesia Investama

Country: Indonesia

Application: Main Engines

Vessel: Tugboats and barges

Key Edge: Shell Rimula R4 X and Shell LubeMonitor

PT Momentum Indonesia Investama operates as a marine logistics company and has its own fleet of tugboats and barges for freight logistics. The company was incorporated in 2011 and is headquartered in Batam, Indonesia.

Its entire fleet was using a competitor’s engine oil and had an oil-drain interval of 500 hours. The vessels’ annual sailing days are approximately 300.

Shell Marine distributor PT Cahaya Samoedera Bersaudara, with Shell Marine, offered to run a trial with Shell Rimula R4 X 15W-40 and was confident of achieving an oil-drain interval of up to 1,000 hours.

3 | Outcome

The oil-drain interval for the trial vessel was extended from the 500 to nearly 1,000 hours: almost 50%. The oil analysis showed that the oil remained within specifications. The engine continued to run smoothly and was generally cleaner.

4 | Value

PT Momentum Indonesia Investama has managed to extend its oil-drain interval and is thus operating a more effective fleet and, importantly, has achieved its objective of saving on lubrication costs. Through the longer oil-drain interval, the customer has estimated that savings per year for 12 vessels will be approximately $61,0001
